competition, and poker

I’m reading Scott Belsky’s Making Ideas Happen.  There’s a section in there where he says:

Ideas often have the tendency to lie stagnant until we are jolted into action by either excitement or fear…  For this reason, competition — regardless of whether it stems from friendly camaraderie or outright envy — is an extremely powerful motivating force.  It serves as a catalyst for taking action and pushes us to improve our overall level of performance…  The competitive forces around you will display better ways of doing things.  Watch them — and get to know them — rather than pretend they don’t exist…  While it may be against your nature to do so, you should actively seek out competition and be grateful for it.  By embracing competition, you stay at the top of your game.

He might as well be talking about how to get better at poker.  No matter how many training videos you watch, how many books you read, how many hands you post or how many fish you filet, the only way to truly mine the depths of the game is to challenge yourself.  And that will never change, regardless of how tough the games get.  So what if you get your ass handed to you by someone better?  In my book, losing 5 BI to a great player is a good thing.

Now you get to figure out why you lost.  And then beat them the next time.

  2. Great Post Krantz… I love nothing more than losing to someone, learning what I did wrong, fixing it, and beating them later on. More satisfying than winning against donks imo.

  4. Hey Chief,

Going off on an unrelated tangent, I wanted to procure your opinion as a connoisseur of sci-fi. What is your general opnion of BSG? I am not a particular fan of sci-fi having found little to no nourishment within the genre since Blade Runner but having the opportunity to watch through the BSG blu-ray set I found it reasonably watchable. My wife enjoyed it more than I do which is strange considering she frequently derides me for being a huge geek. So, I seek a view from someone more firmly attuned to the genre than myself. I suspect it should polarize opinion in some way?

  6. Tim – I really really liked BSG for most of its run. Great writing/casting elevated it out of the realm of just your average sci-fi show. They EPIC-ly failed on the ending though, I thought it was really really disappointing… but I’ll probably watch it again some day so I’m reserving final judgement until then. My absolute favorite shows in that genre are Firefly and Dollhouse. Joss Whedon ftw.

  7. off on another tangent, what do you foresee for the future of poker? Will it ever return to the heights of 04′/06′ or is it doomed to keep declining until it’s impossible to make any more money from the game?
Appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

  8. Dan – I don’t think it can ever be like it used to be, but if that happens I will rent a giant castle and throw a masquerade ball where everyone dresses like dollar bills, and post streaming video.

Poker is still growing internationally. I think brighter, but different colored skies are ahead. Poker will always have winning and losing players, but the games might look a bit different than they do now. And it’s just a matter of time before online poker is regulated in the US. Maybe I’m a dreamer, but I’d rather be all glass half full on this one.
