World Series of Poker Main Event Trip Report

I’ll preface this by saying that yes I went busto but I made it to the dinner break!!! and that the Main Event is by far the softest field (filled with awful players) each and every year since Moneymaker won and that I got really unlucky with my table draw (Paul Wasicka and Lee Markholt, and a bunch of other tight players) and didn’t play ANY funny hands to amuse myself.

Here are some hands I did play, though:

Huge nit, v bad player opens UTG to 600 at 100/200 blinds. This is most definitely an overpair – I saw him limp AK and AQ earlier so an open raise from early position is huge. We’re like 20k effective, all fold to me on the BTN and I call 57o. Flop is Td3d4x and he cbets 1200 and I raise to 3100 and he calls pretty quick. Turn Jo, check/check. River 4d, he bets 5k relatively quickly. I ask him if he has a flush and he says “If I told you that would give you an unfair advantage” so I ship all-in and he folds.

I raise and Lee Markholt reraises. I fold.

I raise, everyone calls, I miss and check/fold.

Paul Wasicka raises, two callers, I think about squeezing with any two cards, but the CO beats me to it and I fold.

I get Aces and win a small pot.

One hour and thirty minutes were spent getting a massage while I chipped up 4k.

After dinner I get AI with AK to Wasicka’s AK and we chop the pot. I’m down to about 7500-8k.

Final hand: Wasicka opens in LP, I mean to reraise KTo to 2100 but accidentally just call. Flop is Q97r and I check and Paul asks me what I have left and bets 900 into 1800ish. I think this is a pretty easy tell that he’s weak because if he had a big hand he’d likely just try to get a look at my chips himself and make a standard bet rather than basing his bet size based on my stack size. So I auto-ship and he hems and haws and talks about how he played the hand bad and finally crying calls with JJ. I turn an 8 but get no help on the river and he shakes my hand and now I am free from these damn tournaments.

Ariel almost got me to make a bet with him in the car ride home that we can’t play any 10k or under live tournaments ever again besides HU events. But I kind of wanna play some PLO events next year and also just wanted to drive the car off a cliff, but I didn’t and now we’re home and tomorrow is the 4th of July!

PS I think the ME is going to hit bigger numbers than last year. The scene at the Rio is pretty encouraging for poker, there are a lot more foreign players playing now, and Wayne Newton managed to even come on down to singy-say “shuffle up and deal.” And I kinda wanna see this poker musical this weekend.

Patrik is on so I’m going to play some RailHeaven right now. Hopefully I run OK.

PPS Well that didn’t go so well, lost 1.5 deep BI and lost my biggest pot ever value-cutting myself.  Not sure how I feel about the hand, not going to post it here b/c I don’t have the PT patch for the 500/1k games…  I talked to a cpl ppl who have played with Patrik and the opinion is mixed.  Too bad he didn’t call w worse :-/  Fortunately I’ve been crushing LarsLuzak so he is paying for my shots against Patrik, who now unfortunately is prolly up small on me lifetime :-(

  1. I don’t know. The $1500 events play like $10+1 online turbos imo….

you’re better off playing off the 10k at roulette or strippers next time.

I watched the hand. His timing and your timing both pointed the same way.
